Gregory Williams started playing drums at the age of 12 to the music of the big bands that played throughout the 1930’s and 1940’s. Playing to the records, Greg discovered the wonderful world of swing music and quickly made the heroes of that era—Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Davy Tough, Jo Jones his own. Carefully listening to the rhythm sections of the Goodman, Basie and Shaw bands, Greg came to greatly appreciate the older styles of drumming which he incorporates into his current play. While growing up, Greg was fortunate to have met many of the musicians from the swing era and collected autographs as well as treasured memories of conversations he will never forget. When Greg relocated to the Washington DC area in 1999, he started taking swing dance lessons and became involved with the collection of vintage drums and cymbals to capture the true percussion sound of the swing era. He has played with many jazz and big band groups in and around the DC Metropolitan area to include the Swingtime Big Band and the Olney Big Band. Greg feels privileged to be playing with Craig Gildner and his wonderful group of musicians and admires Craig’s focus on playing high-quality swing music. Greg also feels lucky to be living two dreams—music and the life of a criminal investigator—which has been his day job for over 22 years.
